Shelter Projects 10th edition CALL FOR ABSTRACTS

[English] – You can also find instructions in Arabic, French and Spanish

Are you a practitioner and want to contribute by sharing valuable lessons learned on shelter and settlements programmes? Tell us about your project by submitting an abstract for a case study.

From 1 April to 30 June 2024, we will be looking for new shelter and settlements projects to be included in the upcoming Shelter Projects 10th edition that will be published in 2025.

The abstracts can be submitted in ARABIC, ENGLISH, FRENCH, and SPANISH, but note that case studies will be developed predominantly in ENGLISH. Efforts will be made to accommodate requests and support the development of case studies in multiple languages

Eligibility Criteria

For being considered for inclusion in the publication, abstracts submitted should meet the following criteria:

  • Must be about shelter and settlements related programming – inclusive of essential household, personal and non-food items (in-kind or through cash); settlement / urban planning or upgrades; policy / regulatory work; housing, land and property (HLP) support; shelter/housing provision; rental support; information, education, and communication (IEC) materials, etc.
  • The project/programme must be complete or at the stage where lessons can be extracted from implementation and outcomes. Design concepts and untested prototypes are not eligible.
  • Sufficient information and materials about the project must be available for creating a case study, including for example evidence of outcomes (ideally from output to impact), evaluations, technical documents, etc.

The submitting practitioner should also be committed to providing the necessary information and to working with the Shelter Projects team throughout the case study development process.

Submission Instructions

A form will be available HERE (Link will be available from 1 April 2024) to be filled in and submitted directly on the form.

Note that photos of the project (a minimum of 8 diverse photos with a minimum length of 600 pixels each) and other supporting documents (reports, technical documents, etc.) should be submitted together with the abstract. Photographs submitted alongside case studies may also be entered into the Shelter Projects photo competition, but this application must be done separately.

Selection and case study development process

The period for submission of abstracts will be 1 April to 30 June 2024 and abstracts will be reviewed and selected on a rolling basis. Authors are therefore encouraged to submit as early as possible.

The eligible abstracts (as per the criteria outlined above) will be evaluated by the Shelter Projects Working Group (SPWG) on a rolling basis. Criteria for accepting an abstract for case study development include:

  • The significance / scale of impact of the work for the given context.
  • Potential contribution to learning (positive lessons and challenges) from the case study.
  • Quality of the submission materials and intervention.

Particular consideration will also be given to cases that highlight underrepresented geographic areas or types of programming, or partnership or work done by local actors.

Authors of selected abstracts will be invited to develop the full case study. Full case studies are typically about 8 pages, including photos and diagrams. Before being accepted for publication, case studies will be reviewed by the Shelter Projects team and peer-reviewed by other practitioners of shelter and settlements programming. An accepted abstract and even development of a case does not guarantee publication.

The overall process to develop a case study, including all reviews and revisions, is approximately 16 weeks (about 3 and a half months) from the abstract acceptance.
